The Empire That Was Russia: The Prokudin-Gorskii Photographic Record Recreated


This is a great follow up to my last article about Panorama photos.

These images were made about 100 years ago using an innovative process. The photographer took three photos using Red, Green, and Blue filters. This is very similar to the way digital photos are recorded now.

Rather then getting caught up in the technology used to capture the photos, look at these images as moment frozen in time.

Notice how clear the sky is and white the domes are. Try to picture your self as the photographer standing on the side of a hill, and clicking his shutter. Did he ever dream that some day thousands of people across the world would some day view his work?
